The 1850 Stevens, his brother and three other members of the club formed a consortium, would build a boat to sail to England.
The aim was two-fold, show the ability of the shipbuilding industry of the United States and earn money by competing in races.
The Consortium chosen as designer George Steers, who had outstanding building fast boats in the port of New York. It was delivered at the beginning of may, 1851.
On 21 June he left the port of New York, arriving at Le Havre on 12 July. Aware the English that the America I zarpo of the French port on July 29, they could not resist the temptation to see the boat and left to meet the Laverock (a cutter of the Royal Yacht Squadron), it was clear that I wanted to improvise a career during the tour that was missing to the Isle of Wight.
The American won easily, but this victory ruined the main objective which was to wager large sums in races, Stevens made several challenges but none was accepted.
Finally to public pressure the RYS I invite America to compete in the annual regatta of the club around the Isle of Wight.
The race is held on August 22. Fifteen boats headed to the starting line, after a very slow start by problems to raise the anchor, the America rapidly recover the time lost, to finally finish first with a wide lead. The next day they give Stevens the hundred Guineas Cup.
This was the beginning of the America's Cup.
The first challenge occurred in 1870 in New York Harbor.

AMERICA, complete kit, that spend hours and hours entertaining, enjoying its construction. To finally have a work of art at home.
