On the 13th of May 1787 the first of two fleets departed from Plymouth, England on a journey to the far side of the world. Under the leadership of Captain Arthur Phillip, the convoy of 11 ships contained 1500 marines, officers, seaman and their families, plus 732 convicts. They were bound for the great South Land to establish the penal colony of New South Wales, (Australia). The fleet took eight months and one week to arrive in Botany Bay and just seven days later, on the 26th January 1788, sailed into Port Jackson, now known as Sydney Harbour. Captain Phillip proclaimed the first Australia day and became first Governor of the new nation.

The HMS Supply weighed 168 tons and was the swiftest ship in the first fleet and acted as a scout and message carrier during the voyage. It was the first ship to enter Botany Bay on the 19th January 1788. The Supply rates with the Sirius as the most famous historical ship of the new Australian nation.
